Columbia – Yesterday, we wrote that Congressional leaders had reached a sweeping deal to fund the Federal Government for two years. Today, that deal appears on the verge of collapse as Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) holds the Senate floor in an effort to block a vote before the current continuing resolution expires. This would lead to the second government shutdown of 2018.
Why is Paul doing this? Senator Paul has been a consistent fiscal hawk throughout his political career. He’s taken issue with the provision of the budget deal that allows for increased spending. Per Axios, Paul’s endgame is a separate vote on spending caps.
The White House has reportedly instructed federal agencies to prepare for a lapse in funding at midnight, and members of Congress have been preparing for a very late vote. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) has stated that his chamber has the votes to pass the spending bill, despite strong opposition from Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
