Camden, S.C. – Last night, S.C. State Guard Commander, attorney, businessman, and community leader Tom Mullikin announced that he will enter the race for South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District once the Senate confirms incumbent Mick Mulvaney.
The 5th district is a broad swath of South Carolina that spans part of the Upstate, the Midlands, and the Pee-Dee. It includes Gaffney, Newberry, Rock Hill, Winnsboro, Camden, Sumter, and Bishopville.
Tom Mullikin is, by far, the best choice to represent this district in Congress. In full disclosure, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of knowing Mr. Mullikin for years now, and I will be helping his campaign’s youth outreach effort.
Tom Mullikin is not a politician. He’s a veteran, Commander of the S.C. State Guard, an attorney, and a businessman. He has pledged to introduce term limits legislation on Day 1, and anyone who knows Tom knows that when he says something, he means it.
When he took over the State Guard, it was teetering on the edge of irrelevance. Now, it’s one of the foremost volunteer military organizations in the Southeast.
He also understands that it is imperative that we begin to make a concerted effort to include young people in the political process, and has a firm grasp of the issues that matter most to my generation, including jobs, education, energy, and ethics.
As I stated once before, Mullikin may also be the most interesting man in the world. He’s a scuba diver, a mountain climber, a black belt in Karate, and a professor – all this from a person who doctors said would never walk.
