Columbia – South Carolina House Speaker Pro Tempore Tommy Pope confirmed to us via Twitter that he is still planning on running for Governor of South Carolina in 2018, and plans to kick off his campaign in June.

I did not know very much about Pope before this Twitter exchange, so I began looking into his legislative record.
He appears to be a solid conservative, especially on social issues. I look forward to learning more about him as his campaign progresses.
Pope’s early campaign kickoff may give him an edge in what is expected to be a vast Republican field. Candidates rumored to be considering a run include Rep. Mick Mulvaney, Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster, Attorney General Alan Wilson, and former SCDHEC head Catherine Templeton.
