Columbia- The Republican conference in the House of Representatives is more divided than ever before. We need a Speaker who can bridge the divide between centrist, establishment minded Republicans and conservatives on the right flank. Chaffetz could be this person. He has been chairman of the Oversight committee, and has taken high profile fights on the Secret Service and Planned Parenthood. He has a good working relationship with members of the House Freedom Caucus, many of whom are on his committee, as well as members of the leadership, which he has had to work with throughout his tenure as committee chairman.
Second, Chaffetz is an articulate defender of conservatism. As he put it, we need a “Speaker who speaks” and can bring the fight to the Senate and to the White House. For too long, the House has been where meaningful legislation goes to die. He will fight to curb the National Debt, fight ObamaCare, and fight the military. These are issues that the Republican conference is relatively united on, and a strong Speaker can get bills passed and unite the conference.
Third and finally, we need to give a voice to the rank-and-file members. Chaffetz says he is not afraid to put controversial bills on the floor, so that members of the House can debate them and vote on them. He would improve communication between the House Republican Leadership and rank-and-file members.
