When President Obama and John Boehner both support something that Bernie Sanders and Rick Santorum both oppose, there is probably something fishy going on. In this case it’s the Trans-Pacific Partnership, also called TPP, Fast Track, or Obamatrade.
Basically, the TPP is a trade agreement between 12 Pacific Rim nations (USA, China, Australia, Canada, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam). So far, China and the US have been the major drafting parties. There are a number of major problems with this. First, China has been thumbing it’s national nose at America’s international prowess by literally building islands in waters claimed by foreign nations in order to gain access to precious minerals. As long as China is engaging in these activities, we should not be negotiating with them at all, and much less giving them more negotiating power than they already have. Second, China is engaging in large-scale currency manipulation that is having a devastating cost on American jobs. We should not be engaging in any trade negotiations with a country we are in a trade war with.
The other main reason that the TPP must be stopped is that it removes power from the US Congress and gives it to international bureaucracy. The agreement would move major regulatory powers from Congress to international organizations. This should concern the right because it would give foreign leaders major control over regulating the american economy. It should worry the left because it would give China, a country with air so polluted it is the cancer-causing equivalent to smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day, major control over environmental regulations.
Please write your congressmen and senators and encourage them to stop TPP and keep American Sovereignty out of the hands of Beijing.
